Responsible gambling: how to play slots without harming yourself

A slot is paid entertainment with a built-in house edge. To keep it from becoming a problem, set your limits before the first spin, not once the game has already drawn you in.

Why slots are so easy to get hooked on

  • Pace. A spin lasts a few seconds, so it is easy to place hundreds of bets in an hour.
  • Near misses. Two matching symbols with the third just beside them create a feeling that success is close, even though the outcome has already been determined by the random number generator.
  • Autoplay. The reels spin without pauses, and the decision to continue is no longer made consciously.
  • Small wins. A payout smaller than the bet is still presented by the animation as a win.

A personal gambling plan

What to decide in advance What it looks like in practice
Session budget An amount you would not mind losing completely; you must not top it up during play
Time A timer on your phone; when it goes off, the session is over
Stopping point after a win You withdraw part of the winnings straight away instead of betting it again
Rule after a loss You do not raise your bet and do not come back to "win it back" the same day

Warning signs

Pay attention if you notice at least a few of these in yourself:

  • thoughts about gambling come up even at work or at home with loved ones;
  • you gamble with money set aside for rent, utility bills or debts;
  • after a loss you want to win back what you lost right away;
  • you lie to your family about how much you gamble;
  • without gambling you feel irritable or anxious, or your sleep is disturbed.

Limits and breaks at casinos

Licensed operators in Ukraine are required to provide self-control tools. In your personal account you can usually set a deposit limit, reminders about session length, or temporarily block your account. Lowering a limit takes effect immediately, while the casino may set a waiting period for raising it; this is normal and protects you from impulsive decisions.

Self-exclusion through PlayCity

If a break at a single casino is not enough, you can submit a self-exclusion application to the state register. It applies at all legal casinos for a period of 6 months to 3 years and cannot be cancelled early. The application form and a self-assessment test are available on the PlayCity page on combating gambling addiction.

Support lines and specialists

  • Ministry of Health hotline: 0 800 505 201;
  • a family doctor, psychologist or psychotherapist;
  • Lifeline Ukraine: 7333, around the clock, if you have thoughts of suicide;
  • 112 if there is an immediate threat to life.

If the problem affects someone close to you

Do not pay off someone else's gambling debts and do not give money for a "last try". Speak calmly and about specific incidents, without labels. Suggest going to a specialist together, and take care of yourself: the player's loved ones can also call the hotline.
